New Book Published by WUN CogCom Members

August sees publication, by John Wiley & Sons, of a new book by WUN CogCom Members. The book, ‘Cognitive Communications: Distributed Artificial Intelligence (DAI), Regulatory Policy and Economics, Implementation’, is co-edited by David Grace and Honggang Zhang. The book highlights the unique research being undertaken by WUN CogCom members, with a particular emphasis on aspects such as application of distributed artificial intelligence to communications, not often covered by other books on the subject.

WUN CogCom Best Paper Awards 2012

WUN CogCom today announced the winners of its second annual Best Paper Awards honouring authors publishing in the Cognitive Communications area. The assessment period took place in April 2012, with evaluation based on a popular vote of the WUN CogCom Membership. Each member could vote for up to two papers in each of nine categories of shortlisted papers. Papers from the last five years were eligible. WUN Cognitive Communications Expansion Continues in 2012

The WUN Cognitive Communications Consortium is pleased to announce that it now has members from over 85 organisations worldwide. The latest members widen the list of countries from which members participate, including for the first time members from Israel, Jordan and Morocco. Further applications for membership are still in the pipeline which if approved will take the number of organisations represented to over 90.
This boost to membership will in the future provide additional opportunities for consortium members. It follows successful technical meetings last year in Aachen, Germany and Houston, USA, WUN CogCom’s first Best Paper Awards, and an edited book on Cognitive Communications is due for publication by Wiley in 2012. The Consortium is looking forward to future technical meetings, establishment of Special Interest Groups, the second WUN CogCom Best Paper Awards, and further opportunities for collaboration between members in 2012.

Fourth Meeting and Workshop of the WUN Cognitive Communications Consortium Takes Place in York, UK

University of York played host to the fourth meeting of the WUN Communications Consortium. It was held immediately after WUN COGCOM 2010 its first public workshop which was held in conjunction with IEEE ISWCS. It was the largest event yet for WUN CogCom, with members attending in person or via Skype. The public workshop hosted over 20 peer-reviewed papers from WUN CogCom members and also those from outside with similar interests. The meeting was an opportunity for people from some of its 60+ member organisations to get together to discuss technical issues in Cognitive Communications, staff/student exchanges and next steps to develop the Consortium. Members from North America, Europe, and Asia participated. The Consortium is next scheduled to meet in Aachen, Germany in early May 2011, with the meeting being held alongside IEEE DySPAN 2011.
WUN Cognitive Communications Consortium Expands to Over Sixty Members

The WUN Cognitive Communications Consortium last month welcomed members from a further six organisations. Over 200 participants now come from 60 over organisations worldwide. This global consortium is aimed at fostering research collaboration between both academic and industrial organisations in the cognitive communications area, and has continued to grow rapidly since its inception at the end of 2008. The Consortium has both experts as well as people from organisations with more limited experience who aspire to develop technology and expertise in the area. The Consortium will hold its first public workshop, WUN COGCOM 2010, in York, UK on 22nd September 2010, in conjunction with the IEEE VTS and Comsoc sponsored International Symposium on Wireless Communications Systems.

University of York – Zhejiang University Set-up a Joint Lab for Cognitive Radio and Green Communications

University of York and Zhejiang University, both founding WUN CogCom members, have recently established a jointly run lab for Cognitive Radio and Green Communications. The agreement, signed by York’s Vice Chancellor Prof Brian Cantor and Zhejiang’s President Prof Wei Yang, comes after concluding discussions during the recent visit to Zhejiang University by members of the University. The purpose of the lab is to capitalise on the high levels of complementary activities underway at both institutions. A continuous presence of visiting staff and students at the corresponding institutions is foreseen, along with joint supervision of PhD students, and joint projects. The lab will host an annual seminar and Summer School. Co-Directors of the Lab are Dr David Grace (York) and Prof Honggang Zhang (Zhejiang).

Third Meeting of the WUN Cognitive Communications Consortium Takes Place in Singapore

The third meeting of the WUN Cognitive Communications Consortium (www.wun-cogcom.org) took place on April 10th at the Pan Pacific Hotel in Singapore. It was an opportunity for some of its 50+ member organisations to get together to discuss technical issues in Cognitive Communications, staff/student exchanges and next steps to develop the Consortium. Members from North America, Europe, Asia and Australasia joined the one-day meeting in person, and remotely using Skype, seemingly overcoming the problems of time zones. The Consortium is next scheduled to meet in York on 22nd – 23rd September.
